Public Safety Communications, or wireless communication systems used by first responders and emergency service providers, have existed since the early 20th century. First responders, like policemen, firefighters, or emergency medical professionals, can prevent and rapidly respond to emergencies occurring within a commercial building using Public Safety Communications. How exactly has this form of wireless communication evolved over time?

The Origin of Public Safety Communications

During the 1930s, the concept of an emergency telephone number was created to streamline emergency communications between civilians and law enforcement. This widespread influx of communication directly influenced the way officers disseminated information internally, as systems needed to withstand heavy radio waves. Soon after, two-way emergency communication was standardized throughout most commercial buildings.

The turn of the century brought about major changes to Public Safety Communications systems. Commercial buildings would often possess dead zones, or areas where radio signals could not travel. This would create challenges for those using mobile phones or radios inside commercial buildings to communicate with outside devices. Further breakdowns in communication would ultimately contribute to the next Public Safety Communication innovation.

The 9/11 terrorist attacks expedited the establishment of a single, interoperable network for public safety. Congress established the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) in 2012. According to FirstNet, “it’s the first nationwide network dedicated to public safety.” FirstNet is “ready to help law enforcement, fire service, and EMS do their jobs safely and effectively.” This public safety network is still available to first responders and emergency service providers all over the country.

    Public Safety Communications Today

Today, the requirements for Public Safety Communications systems are strict. Local and state Public Safety DAS codes only allow for UHF, VHF, 700 Mhz, 800 Mhz, and other specific frequencies. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) systems inside of the building must have 99% coverage in regulated areas, at least 90% coverage in general areas, and 95% coverage throughout the overall building. Areas like stairwells and elevators need to have stronger coverage than areas like offices and common locations. This requirement ensures each section of the building has standardized coverage in order for emergency responders to carry out their tasks.
